The dad was living in another country. And the mom, holding everything together on her side of the ocean, wanted to do something special for her son’s bedroom — something that would honour the bond the two of them shared: a love of sailing.
Since blue was her favourite colour, the design direction practically chose itself. A smooth sail from brief to brushstroke — pun very much intended.
The bedroom had good bones but an unfinished feeling that no amount of furniture could solve. The walls around the bed were asking for something — but the existing layout wasn’t giving the space room to breathe. My first move was to reposition the bed entirely, opening up the walls and revealing exactly what the room needed: a wraparound hand-painted nautical mural, a single seamless image spanning two perpendicular walls.
Designing across two walls rather than one gave the mural a dynamic, cinematic quality. On the left wall, a bold geometric sun radiates warm yellow rays that sweep dramatically across the corner — light travelling from one wall to the next, the way it does on the open water at golden hour. The lower portion of both walls belongs to the ocean: layered horizontal stripes in deep navy, steel blue, and soft grey-blue, calm and unhurried. And at the centre of it all, a clean white geometric sailboat glides across the water — simple, strong, and still.
The overall feeling is exactly what the mom was looking for: calm, intentional, complete. A room that needed nothing else added to feel finished — just paint on the walls and a thoughtful furniture layout.
And something more, too. Every time her son looks at those walls, he sees the thing he and his dad share. The sailboat isn’t just a design choice — it’s a connection. A reminder that some bonds don’t need proximity to stay strong.
