I love a good surprise. And this family had a wonderful one planned.
Their daughter was spending the summer abroad — and while she was away, her parents decided to transform her bedroom into something magical, ready and waiting for the moment she walked back through the door.
Inspired by wildflowers and the quiet joy of a garden in full bloom, this hand-painted girls’ bedroom mural was designed to bring the outdoors in — a lush botanical world of foliage, blooms, and harmless little creatures that would give the room a happy, sun-filled morning energy and a soft, soothing quality come evening. A space that would feel joyful in every light, in every season — a particularly welcome thought for anyone living through a Toronto winter.
The design builds in layers, the way a real garden does. A geometric backdrop in different shades of blue sets the stage, giving the composition depth and structure. From there, the foliage takes over: oversized tropical leaves in rich greens, sweeping wildflowers in pink, purple, and orange, and playful botanical shapes in yellow and violet rising up from the base of the walls. Tucked among the leaves are the garden’s quiet inhabitants — butterflies drifting upward, a ladybug resting on a leaf, a tiny snail making its unhurried way across the scene.
