Flowing Waves Abstract Room

A newly renovated basement. A family who loves colour. And a blank statement wall just waiting to become the heart of a new family room.

The brief arrived with feeling rather than specifics — which is often the most exciting kind. They knew they loved movement. They loved beaches. They loved colour. They wanted the space to feel special and welcoming for all the gatherings, celebrations, and quiet evenings that would unfold there. But the exact design? That part they trusted me with.

After working together to pin down a palette — bold and vibrant but cohesive, the kind of colours that feel joyful without being chaotic — I started thinking about the real design challenge: how do you add movement to something static? How do you paint energy onto a wall that will never actually move?

And then the waves came.

This hand-painted abstract wave mural features sweeping ribbons of colour — deep purple, violet, golden yellow, teal, sky blue, and burnt orange — flowing across the entire basement accent wall in long, fluid bands that seems to move with the wind. The composition has a quality that’s almost meditative: your eyes follow the shapes naturally, tracing where each wave begins and ends, discovering the relationship between adjacent colours, finding new details each time you look.

The goal was never to overpower the room. A family room needs to hold conversation, laughter, movie nights, lazy Sunday mornings. The mural had to be bold enough to be a statement and calm enough to be a companion. Something that would stand beautifully on its own — making you company even when the TV is off and you find yourself alone with your thoughts.

That’s what a great mural does that nothing else can.

Renata was wonderful to work with and produced a beautiful mural for us, exactly what we wanted. She worked tirelessly with us to bring our vision to life, even when we didn't know exactly what we wanted at the beginning. The installation was completed over the course of a few days, working around our schedule. Renata is a lovely person and a wonderful artist. Highly recommended. - Cynthia B.
