Two brothers. One huge shared bedroom. And a design challenge that many parents of siblings know well: how do you make a large space feel finished and intentional — without cluttering it, without sacrificing the open floor space kids need to actually play in, and without visually splitting the room in two?
The answer, as always, was on the walls.
The brief came with a beautiful complexity. The older brother was obsessed with dinosaurs. The younger one lived for cars and trucks. The mom knew exactly what she didn’t want — a mural divided down the middle, each half belonging to a different child, the room feeling like two separate worlds stitched together. She wanted the mural to do the opposite: to be a unifying element that belonged to both brothers equally.
I kept the design modern, with clean geometric lines and an elevated, timeless approach that would grow with the boys rather than date quickly. A warm landscape of golden and earthy geometric mountains sweeps across the main wall, anchored by a bold rising sun, subtle mountain silhouettes, and delicate berry vine details crawling along the ceiling corner. The background does what great design always does — it leaves space for imagination.
And then, the characters. On one wall, a friendly hand-painted brontosaurus in soft greens stretches across the landscape, having a peaceful snack — friendly enough to spark wonder, calm enough to avoid nightmares. On the opposite wall, a bold vintage truck climbs the golden hills, wheels turning, going somewhere only a child’s imagination can follow.
During the installation, the boys would sneak in to have a peek at the progress. And then it happened — the youngest started narrating stories about how the dinosaur was chasing the truck, and the truck was racing away from the dinosaur. Back and forth, wall to wall, the whole room suddenly alive with adventure.
I knew I had nailed it.
This hand-painted wraparound mural for a shared boys’ bedroom is a reminder that the best kids’ room murals don’t just decorate a space — they activate it. They give children a world to inhabit, a story to tell, and a room that feels entirely, imaginatively theirs.
